Jerry Berndt

Jerry Berndt (1943-2013) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  For more than 30 years he built a career as a documentary photographer with series on the genocide in Rwanda, civil war in Haiti und homeless people in the US. His pictures were published in major publications in the US and Europe including the New York Times, Newsweek and Paris Match. He was awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and three Massachusetts Artists’ Foundation Fellowships. 


Brendt taught photography at the Art Institute of Boston, the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and the Maine Photographic Workshop. Brendt was included in the MIT Press publication, Photography in Boston: 1955-85, which accompanied an exhibition of the same name at the Decordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. Brendt’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego the Bibliotheque National in Paris and the CollectionFalckenberg/Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Brendt lived in Paris for many years, prior to his death in 2013.
