When what is at stake is sharing the origin, it seems to me necessary to gather a large spectrum of individuals whose origins, passions and paradoxical and contradictory perspectives could help us grasp the unbearable complexity of this place and its voices.
-Frédéric Brenner

As a photographer Frédéric Brenner has spent decades investigating Jewish identity, traveling around the world documenting the diaspora. His publications include Jews/America: A Representation, 1996 and Diaspora, 2003.

His most recent project, entitled This Place, is an exhaustive visual survey of Israel and the West Bank involving a team of photographers in residence organized by Brenner. After years in production, the completed project has spawned a major traveling exhibition, events, and companion monographs from each artist involved.

Brenner’s accompanying book An Archaeology of Fear and Desire is available for purchase.
