“Suddenly you’re alive,” Joel Meyerowitz once said about taking a photograph. “A minute later there was nothing there. You look one moment and there’s everything, [the] next moment it’s gone.” Still working today at 86, Meyerowitz first began taking photographs in 1962, inspired by an encounter with Robert Frank. A pioneer of color photography, which in those days was considered gauche and lowbrow, Meyerowitz helped to elevate it within the art form. In this exhibition at Howard Greenberg Gallery, Meyerowitz presents 10 pairings from his oeuvre. For instance, a dockside scene and a beach scene are connected by the long tan legs and dusty shade of blue in both. The images, dating from 1967 to 2015, are given a new spin through Meyerowitz’s strategic couplings.
